The real cost of a legal template
A $29 template, a $149 subscription, a $249 registered agent, a $400/hour lawyer. Here's what legal documents actually cost small businesses — and what the template is really buying you.
Small businesses need legal documents constantly: contractor agreements, NDAs, operating agreements, employment offers, leases, terms of service. And the market for those documents is a maze of pricing models that all claim to be the cheap option.
The price ladder
At the top: a lawyer, $200–$500+ an hour, for documents drafted to your situation. Correct, expensive, slow.
In the middle: the online legal services. Rocket Lawyer's Standard membership runs $149 a year; LegalZoom's formation tiers run $0 to $299 plus state fees, with the registered agent at $249 a year sold separately. Reasonable — until the upsells, the tiers, and the annual renewals stack up.
At the bottom: the $29 template from a template site. Cheap, instant, and written for nobody in particular — which is the problem. A template written for "a business" in "a state" is a starting point wearing a finished product's clothes.
What a template is actually buying
A template buys you structure: the clauses that should exist, in an order that makes sense, in language that courts have seen before. What it doesn't buy you is judgment — which clauses matter for your situation, what's missing, what's one-sided against you.
That's the gap the template market doesn't advertise: the document is 80% of the work, and the remaining 20% is where the risk lives. A contractor agreement with the wrong indemnity clause isn't "mostly fine." It's a liability with a signature on it.
The checker matters more than the library
This is why a template library alone is half a product. The other half is a second pair of eyes: something that reads the filled-in document and flags what's missing, what's inconsistent, what's one-sided. A deterministic checker — same document, same flags, every time, with reasons stated — turns the template from a starting point into a reviewed draft.
It's not a lawyer. It won't tell you the indemnity clause is wrong for your industry. But it will tell you the indemnity clause is missing, which is the mistake that actually happens.
The honest trade-offs
- Templates are not advice. No template, checker, or subscription replaces a lawyer for high-stakes, unusual, or disputed matters. The honest products say this upfront; the dishonest ones bury it.
- Two countries, two systems. US and Mexican business law are different systems. A template library that covers both — 51 US templates, 14 Mexican — is genuinely useful for border businesses, but no template crosses a border without someone checking the jurisdiction.
- The procedure is the product. A perfect operating agreement that never gets filed is a Word document. Guided procedures — what to file, where, in what order — are what turn documents into completed legal work.
The real cost of a legal template isn't the $29. It's the risk you don't see in the 20% the template doesn't cover. Buy the structure cheap; spend the savings on the review.
